                         Sun. 29th May

Drove most of the day through pretty mountain roads and arrived in the evening at a nice village called Zell-im-Weisental. Stayed on Aire next to Textile museum.

                                                                                                                          297 Kms.

                       Mon. 30th May

Wandered around the Ville and visited the church. We visit lots of churches, not through any religious beliefs on my part, just find them beautiful places and very photogenic. Sent some more postcards to family and friends.

Left affter lunch, we don't hang around too long at any one place, prefer to see the scenery and take a few photos of towns then move on. Any extra info can be obtained from the net at a later date.

Drove to German-France border at Basel but tried to drive through the town instead of sticking to motorway. Big mistake. Will write a book on our escape from Germany one day. We did get over the border eventually and drove on towards Ballon-d-Alsace, ( We like this area,) Follow signs for Ballon, halfway up the mountain is a layby where we have stayed once or twice and is where we stayed for the night.

                                                                                                                                     120 Kms.

Although a very pretty area the roads have lots of bends and attract large amounts of speedy motorbikes especially at weekends and evenings, don't be put off by this but just be aware when on the roads.

                       Tues. 31st May

Come the dawn comes a change in weather. Which is what it does very suddenly in the hills. This is at the top of The Ballon

Drove out of the hills, south, towards Bessancon then onto D437 along Swiss border towards Pontarlier. Stopped outside Maiche on a gravel parking area well off the road.

                                                                                                                                     138 Kms.

                         Wed. 1st June

More mountain roads. All along this stretch very nice. worth a visit. Stopped to fill up with water at Clairvaux-les-Lacs then on to Thoirette to an aire for the night. Didn't realize we had to pay till a man on a biycle came and knocked on the door. 6 Euros.

                                                                                                                                  261 Kms.

                     Thurs. 2nd June

Having trouble finding our way out of towns, think they believe there is still a war on.Long day driving. Arrived in mountains at a place called Col-les-Pradeaux. Drove up a track off the road to stay the night. Very quiet.

                                                                                                                                               310 Kms.

                             Fri. 3rd June

Walked up the track to try and see the view but walked quite a long way up and still going up through trees.dont think we were too far off the top.Got some nice pics of flowers though.

Drove on through Le-Puy-en- Velay, regret not stopping but very busy and diifficult parking. Lots of large rocks with big statues on, all over the place. Will definitely go back one day.On towards Mende and stopped in layby near Costaros. Thunderstorms late in the evening.

                                                                                                                                   120 Kms.

                            Sat. 4th June

Busy road, lots of lorries and quite a few people stopping.

Drove on through Mende onto valley road but took wrong turning, again. Wanted to see a high spot we saw on the map but this road had scenery better than anything we could have expected.

Above a village called Ste. Enimie

                                                       Saturday night!

                                                        Sunday morning

                          Sun. 5th June.

As I have said before the weather is changeable in the hills, but while we were having breakfast it cleared and was a nice day. We wandered up the road to the villaqge that time forgot then back for coffee and had a few bikers call in. Not for coffee though.

That's where we are headng next.

Went down the mountain and into the valley below. Didn't learn from last years mistake of backing up to let someone through. Then I smashed the back light this time I got too close to the rocks and ripped off the back bumper.Pulled in and screwed it back on,luckily not much damage.Drove through beautiful valley then on to the Millau Viaduct and arrived at viewing area late afternoon. Very impressive reception area that tells you all about whats on in the district. We then walked up the hill to get a good view of the bridge.Something special.

Looking at this map you will see the journey through Mende, Ste Enimie to Millau.  We try, where possible  to follow roads with the green edging, this denotes picturesque views and suchlike.

Much more info and pics (not mine) available on this site.

Reception and viewing area for the Millau Viaduct.

                                         Awesome!

If you drive down from the viaduct through the town of Millau and on to the  992-999  towards St. Affrique you go under the viaduct and there is another parking and info area at the base. Didn't go into that one so don't know whats on offer
